Energy Efficiency, Carbon reduction/capture & other environmental technologies
Decarbonisation is driving the need for CO2 reduction and capture technologies. As the single largest spend after crude, minimizing energy losses is a critical aspect across worldwide and Latin American refiner. As refiners look for ways to offset emissions, we will focus on available and new technologies to capture those emissions.
The role of Refineries in the Energy Transition
A significant issue for oil companies and refiners in Latin America is establishing their role in the energy transition and creating a strategy to support local demand while being cost-competitive with their North American and other global counterparts. For this topic, we are looking for exciting papers that could outline the potential options for Latin American refineries to remain successful in the long-term, discussing future refining demand or product portfolio.
Operational Excellence, Process Optimisation & Margin Improvement
With a refining global industry transformation partially due to regulatory pressures, refiners and producers continue to seek feasible means to ensure value and improve margins. Leveraging technology and techniques to enhance reliability, flexibility and smarten operations stand out as priorities for the region’s ageing assets.
Refinery Configuration and Conversion Technologies
Changing bunker fuel specifications, and the rise of electric vehicles, are putting pressure on incumbent refineries in Latin America, as they need to make up their configurations and invest in upgrading, hydrocracking and heavy oil conversion processes. Refiners are also focusing on maximizing their middle distillates, to assure capturing value during the existing “opportunity window” for new investment.
Refining-Petchem Integration and New Routes to Olefins
Higher efficiency internal combustion engines, increasing hybridisation and the rise of e-mobility are eroding transport fuel demand leaving refiners to seek ways to transform hydrocarbons into more valuable products. The future profit for refiners will be very much influenced by the petrochemical share of product mix and as such must route more streams from fuel products to petrochemical products in order to maximize margins. Adding flexibility and petrochemical integration is a key survival strategy for refiners. Papers can include olefins and aromatics production, crude to chemical technologies for new plants and any petrochemical advancements.
Catalysts will continue to be essential for the profitability, sustainability and environmental compliance of refineries. We aim to give a platform to the latest advances in catalyst technologies and to assess how they can be integrated into Latin American refiners’ strategies.
Clean Fuels, Biofuels & Alternative Fuel Production
The ability to produce biofuels and the availability of renewable feedstock is likely to play a crucial role in the survival of some refineries amongst upcoming global environmental legislation. The production of advanced biofuels is firmly on the agenda of some refining players, and puts pressure on existing capacity so today’s refiners are seeking modernized solutions for biomass conversion and clear pathways for the utilisation of existing refinery assets in the future. New technologies and approaches to co-processing are expected to be included in this discussion.
Digitalization has been consolidated as a meaningful differentiator between successful and unsuccessful refiners and producers, as a direct enabler of enhanced productivity as well as improved safety and competitiveness. It is important to discuss how robotics, IT systems and automation can support refinery engineers with their day-to-day onsite processes, including big data, IOT and cyber security.
Maintenance and Reliability
As regional refineries age, the maintenance and reliability of them continue to be an important issue. We welcome papers on asset maintenance, turnarounds and technologies aimed at maximising value and the life cycle of refinery equipment – as well as key ROI indicators.
